- Packages - Bukit Lutut Expedition (3D/2N)

Is your idea of experiencing the rainforest being fully immersed in the middle of it all, all day and night, away from any creature comforts and human structures? To be surrounded by ancient towering trees and to traverse flowing streams and rivers, struggle across undulating terrain devoid of wooden walkways or well-trodden paths? To fall asleep amidst the buzz of a myriad of wildlife, maybe in a tent, or a special stretcher, or a hammock? If just the thought of it makes you yearn for a new adventure, this is for you!

Your trip begins with a 45-minute speedboat ride* from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, zipping through meandering rivers lined with mangroves and nipah palms. From Bangar, its a short drive and a stroll into our Eco Village, tucked away in a corner of Sumbiling Lama, an Iban village, and fronting an upstream stretch of the Temburong River.

Upon arrival, re-pack your camping bags, bringing only what you need and also your share of the camping equipment/rations, and after a short briefing, the adventure begins with a river crossing.

Once on the other side, begin your trek through a section of secondary forest, along well-trodden paths used by local villagers, before reaching the smaller Mutong River, a rocky river with gushing rapids heading up into the highlands, not safely navigable by boat after the first few hundred metres. Here, depending on river conditions, cross the river at either knee deep, waist deep or even chest deep water - watch your belongings! Once on the bank, continue into primary forest, pushing on along undulating terrain, with the trees getting bigger in circumference and taller as you go along. Stop for packed lunch in the middle of nowhere, before continuing on to 'base camp', at the foot of Bukit Lutut. This is your last stop for water refills, and this is also where the true challenge begins. With your full water supply making a heavier load, and the steep constant uphill with no paths or ropes, this ascent will make or break you!

When you finally reach the top, trek along the rocky ridge to the hilltop clearing and camp area, before finally giving yourself a pat on the back for finally conquering the peak! After a short rest, set up camp and prepare for the night, enjoying simple camping fare as the temperature drops and the bonfire becomes a welcome pleasure.

The next day after breakfast, pack up and descend back to 'base camp' - where you can catch your breath or choose to monkey around climbing the giant buttress roots of a dipterocarp tree. From here, the next challenge begins, trekking a steep downhill with loose muddy soil, and eventually following the flow of rocky streams, slippery and sharp. The stream leads you right to its mouth, where it dramatically pours into the Mutong River as a small waterfall. Cautiously abseil down the side of the waterfall and stop to prepare lunch on the rock banks.

After lunch, experience river trekking along stretches of the river shallow enough for this purpose, but do watch out for the gushing rapids - some 'small' ones are strong enough to wash away your precious footing! By mid afternoon, you will have reached the river campsite. Set up the tents, put out the fish nets, and its then its time for a proper dip in the river, cherishing the fact that there are no more steep uphills! If the fish nets yield a catch or if there happens to be jungle shoots in season, there will be fresh food for dinner. Fall asleep with the harmonic rainforest symphony buzzing through to sunrise.

On your finally day, head back to the Eco Village after early breakfast and packing up.
Upon returning, freshen up and get down to a well-deserved lunch, possibly with a treat in the form of wild vegetables foraged from nearby! Some relax and photo time, and then time to say good bye. Depart for Bangar, returning to BSB by speedboat*, with fond memories of your gruelling rainforest hill expedition, made possible by Sumbiling Eco Village

Other Things to Note:

Camping packages are a more hands-on option, and guests are expected to work with the rest of the group in campsite setup, meal preparation, carrying of supplies and more.

As a full rainforest immersion experience, there are no toilets, showers or built-up facilities, and guests are expected to anticipate this. Personal adjustments may need to be made regarding changes of clothes, bathing, sleeping comforts, etc.

Recommended weight range to be carried should be no more than 7-8 kgs, in order to preserve energy during trekking.

* Not applicable to tours commencing from Bangar
